Bunty's Tea Room Lincoln

Licoln is a cathedral town of Lincolnshire in the East Midlands of England. Offering an experience rich in history, shopping and plenty of places to eat, Lincoln is the perfect destination for a tea room.

Steep Hill is a well known street in Lincoln which attracts many tourists, at the top of the hill is the entrance to Lincoln Cathedral. Consisting of independent shops , boutiques and tea rooms like Bunty's.

I saw a picture of Bunty's on Instagram and on our way back from Nottingham we stopped off at Lincoln for a trip to Bunty's. Well known for old fashioned English tea, Bunty's is a perfect break from the climb of steep hill.
From the outside Bunty's is a pale blue building with antique properties, it has upstairs and downstairs seating but there is often a wait for tables due to its popularity.
The till is very close to the door causing a bit of a congestion when you walk in. Behind the till there are rows and rows of tea pots and antique crockery.
The cakes are presented within the window area in glass cake stands, this is a very bad idea as the cakes dry out quicker due to the direct sunlight.
When we visited there were six cakes on offer but they were disappearing quickly.
Bunty's is full of antique objects that you cant help oohing are ahhing at. I especially liked the bunting everywhere as it was well in keeping with the traditional English theme.

We were seated upstairs on a table with photos under the glass top. This unique idea kept us entertained whilst we waited, but the concept looks messy. The menus we were given (shown above) had a war like look to them, with faded patterns and pictures, very impressive!

 The Tea
We ordered two pots of tea, Earl grey and Green tea. Both were lovely and reasonable at £2.00 per pot.
However I was extremely disappointed by our teapots, after admiring all the glorious pots on my arrival I was a bit down hearted by the William Shakespeare teapots. I do understand to some this would be a novelty, but personally I think they are ugly. I would of much preferred a pretty, floral tea pot.
On the other hand our tea cups and saucers were to die for! They were the finest Royal Albert china I had seen in a long time.

The Cake

The two cakes we ordered were the victoria sandwich and the peanut butter and chocolate cake. I would never normally chose a chocolate cake but due to my love of the american treat reeses, I thought it would be a good idea to try it!
Both cakes were a good size and presented well with cake forks.

Victoria Sandwich
The Victoria Sandwich is my favourite cake, with its simplicity and great taste I love to try it in different tea rooms, experiencing the different takes on the tradition and comparing it to my own recipe.
Due the direct  sunlight (even in February) the sponge had completely dried out and I was very let down. So I simply returned it with my feedback, my mum always says we should never force ourselves to eat something which is not up to standard. Simply send it back otherwise the baker will never know how they could improve.
To my delight Bunty's were completely understanding and Matt (the owner) was very sympathetic. He offered me another cake in replacement. Not many tea rooms have taken my feedback as professionally as Matt did on that day. In replacement I ordered the carrot cake.

Carrot Cake
A carrot cake contains more moisture in its sponge due to the carrot, oil etc. Therefore even with the sunshine it still had not dried out.
With a thick butter cream and sponges containing giant raisins, it was beautiful. Still a little dry at the edges but still a good version of the classic.

Peanut Butter and Chocolate Cake
A risky choice for me, I find chocolate sponge very sickly and not too my taste buds. But between the butter cream containing peanut butter the cake was delicious! I also think there was peanut butter in the sponge as it too tasted of the peanut butter.
I have never had anything quite like it since!

When I went to pay, Matt refused to let me pay for the victoria sandwch cake, which was a lovely kind gesture. We had a fabulous conversation about our trip to Lincoln. In my opinion he is an excellent front of house, owner and man.
